Petzl Tactikka Review

Petzl Tactikka Review

I have here the hybrid Petzl Tactikka head-torch. It’s called hybrid as it is compatible with both standard AAA batteries and the Petzl Core battery. I must confess I don’t know what sort of difference the Core Petzl Tactikka Reviewbattery will provide in terms of brightness or length of burn time. I can however tell you that the core battery is rechargeable via a micro-USB built into the battery itself and it takes approximately 3 hours to charge.

I normally hate head torches with a passion and I’ve never bought one but, I was given some as a child and I always found it uncomfortable and bulky. Things have changed since I was a child though. Light bulbs have gotten smaller and brighter. Batteries last longer. The array of functions such as brightness, strobe and S.O.S signalling has Continue reading Petzl Tactikka Review

Blackhawk UK-SFK Review

Blackhawk UK-SFK Review
Well at first glance it looks like its a very high priced collectors knife but, it is meant to be a full on combat knife based on the ‘SFK'(Special Forces Knife) tag. It’s a modern take on the Fairbairn-Sykes and while I doubt it will ever find it’s way into the British military’s standard issue kit, it certainly has some appeal. The UK-SFK is obviously not going to be a general purpose blade for the average joe, but as a combat blade it’s going to perform as well as any other blade out there or better.

The sheath is some sort of injection molded plastic and is rather square and unattractive. It comes with a few different sized mounting brackets (I assume Blackhawk UK-SFK Reviewfor molle body armour), although it lacks any sort of tra Continue reading Blackhawk UK-SFK Review

Keela Belay Smock Review

Keela Belay Smock Review
Well I’ve probably missed the ideal time of year for this smock in Britain as winter has now left us and a warm spring has already had me in shorts several times. I like getting ahead on seasonal goods though as it gives me a chance to make sure I’m prepared and I have plenty of time to get a bargain.

Keela Belay Smock ReviewThe insulation is a microfiber creation known as Primalof Gold. This is reported to be one of the worlds best clothing insulations and has some very interesting properties. It feels like you are wearing a down jacket which makes it incredibly soft and light, yet very warm, and it compresses down reasonably well. If you want something to keep in your pack for emergencies then this is definitely a good contender. It’s well padded Continue reading Keela Belay Smock Review

Blackhawk Tatang Review

Blackhawk Tatang Review
So let’ just make this clear from the start. This is a combat knife, pure and simple. It’s difficult for me to test it in that respect as I’m not from a military background, but as a knife enthusiast I’ve handled many knives and strait out of the box you can see this isn’t for doing some bushcraft or cutting some steaks in the kitchen(not that you wouldn’t look badass doing so). Blackhawk Tatang ReviewAs a general blade it’s pretty much pointless as it has a very specific design that isn’t tailored to general outdoor use. I think however, that this is an excellent knife for something like a bug out bag as it will definitely perform many of the tasks one might encounter in an urban survival situation. Being able to hack through steel wire and carve up some wood shavings for a fire, all Continue reading Blackhawk Tatang Review

Wazoo Survival Gear

Wazoo Survival Gear
So this is a relatively new company to the market, but they do seem to be pushing out some decent gear. They make survival bracelets and belts to zombie t-shirts and key-chains. I have a couple of items here from these guys just to get a flavour of what they are about, specifically their Cache Cap and Bushcraft necklace. So far I’m pretty impressed and here’s why.

The Cache Cap was something I was very sceptical about. I figured you wont get much in there as it is pretty much just a regular baseball cap, and anything you didWazoo Survival Gear put in there would feel more like a hindrance. I though, if anything, I would just use it to store some cash, but I was actually surprised by what you can do with it. It has 6 pockets i Continue reading Wazoo Survival Gear

Ultra Dry Adventurer Dry Sack

Ultra Dry Adventurer Dry Sack

Well this isn’t going to be a lengthy review, but I thought this was worth giving a bit of attention to. I’ve bought really cheap dry sacks in the past from superstores,Ultra Dry Adventurer Dry Sack just because they were in front of me in an outdoor section, but I never figured there would be a bigger quality difference as price went up. I was pleasantly surprised when I was wrong. I don’t think this is expensive, but I certainly feel like my kit will be much better off inside this that the others I’ve carried. It’s made of a 500D polymer which feels slightly rubbery and is definitely thicker than its cheaper counterparts. The seams have been ‘thermo welded’ to ensure no leakage and the straps have been reinforced for security an Continue reading Ultra Dry Adventurer Dry Sack
